Skoda Karoq picks up the golden gong

Auto Express has named the Skoda Karoq as Used Car of The Year for 2022. Judges said it was an SUV that really delivers, and has something for everyone: quality, practicality, value, low running costs and plenty of driving satisfaction.

The silver award went to the Citroen C3 Aircross SUV for its French flair, quirky styling, practical cabin, plus its comfort as well as overall value.

Meanwhile, the Volvo S90 picked up the bronze award, with the judging panel commenting that the Volvo S90 is something of a phenomenon and feels a cut above its German rivals.

Auto Express Editor-in-Chief Steve Fowler said: “Buying used has always been a great way to get more value from a car purchase. But now sought-after second-hand models have rocketed in price, it’s vital buyers do their homework and buy the very best car they can afford.”

Automotive consumer champion Auto Express details the checks that all car shoppers need to do before they venture out of the door.

“Should anything not look quite right – or the numbers don’t stack up – don’t be afraid to walk away. There are plenty more cars out there, so don’t feel pressured into buying,” Steve Fowler commented.

Car buying homework

Check the ownership history of the car, plus the mileage. Forums can be a great source of information, and motoring organisations can – for a fee – check cars to ensure they are roadworthy. You should also take out a vehicle history check to ensure it’s free from finance, not stolen or recorded as a write off.

Can you afford it?

It sounds obvious, but it’s not just the up-front cost you need to consider. Think about the monthly repayments and final payment if you’re buying on a PCP. And don’t forget other necessary costs involved in the total cost of ownership, which include servicing, fuel, road tax and insurance.

Where to look?

Research should include looking at advice from motoring experts such as Auto Express. And don’t forget that classified ads are the best real-world price guide there is.

Where to buy?

Private sales usually represent the lowest prices, but you’ll have little comeback if you buy a lemon. Dealers of all kinds have legal obligations, though for the best peace of mind, manufacturer used-approved schemes offer guarantees and additional checks – and will usually only include cars with a full service history.
